His formal education includes a B.S. in E.E. from Columbia, an M.E.E. from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, and a course on patent law in Columbia. He has held Professional Engineer licenses from New York, Maryland, and California (E5897) and has been a Registered Patent Agent and a Certified Manufacturing Engineer (SME).
His professional societies include Sigma Xi, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE, Life Member), Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and, when he worked in those fields, American Rocket Society [now American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)], Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), Robot Institute.
He has worked as an employed engineer in both small and large companies, as an entrepreneur (Numerical Control Corp., Devonics, Inc., Typagraph Corp., Mobot Corp., L. J. Kamm Co.), as a teacher and author in design theory and practice, and as a consulting engineer, inventor, expert witness, author, and engineering columnist, which are his present activities.
He has invented and designed mechanical and electro-mechanical devices of great diversity. These include robots, numerical controls, computer peripherals, space vehicles and components, simulators, a mail sorter memory, a heart-lung machine, automatic test-and-sort and other manufacturing equipment for semi-conductors and other products, transducers, switchgear, engine components, and the Decimal Keeper slide rule (now in the Smithsonian and Oxford Science Museums.) As a consultant he has created new products and product improvements for many clients. He has 38 patents.
Mr. Kamm has published or presented seven books, 27 technical papers, many tutorials, and much trade literature. He has lectured at three universities and several companies. He wrote a regular column in Electronic Design and frequent tutorials in Chipcenter.com. He gave a lecture series on "Energy" at UCSD. He has been consulted by the National Academy of Science and the State of California to evaluate grant proposals.
