A derivative is a claim whose cash flow and value are derived completely from one or more underlying assets, financial instruments or indices. There are derivatives that allow people to bet on and hedge against movements in currencies, interest rates, shares, debt, or property. A swap is a type of derivative and it can be based on interest rates, currencies, equity indices, property indices, etc. Return swaps trade the return on one portfolio, benchmark or index for another.
