Premises Security is a broad term used to describe the presence or absence of security at a particular property, whether designed to protect the property, or any specific asset on the property, including persons. In litigation against the property owner or occupier, allegations typically assert that the crime was reasonably foreseeable and that the defendant provided inadequate security, or provided it negligently. Security experts are frequently retained by one or both sides to retrospectively assess the situation and the security provided at the time of the incident (cause of the lawsuit), and as to its adequacy and any negligence. Intentional torts by security officers (use of force, false arrest claims, etc.) may also be included.
