In January of 2012, OSHA published a white paper outlining the benefits of what it refers to as Injury and Illness Prevention Programs (or I2P2s, in OSHA’s terminology). In this paper, OSHA sites a decrease in injury and illness incidence of between 9% and 60%, based on the impact of I2P2s in 8 states with I2P2 requirements. This emphasis by OSHA on the potential impact of an I2P2 continues the approach that OSHA has long taken through its Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), in which approximately 2400 businesses currently participate, and through its Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP), which recognizes small employers that operate exemplary injury and illness prevention programs.
As not only OSHA but also business leaders increasingly see the value of a systematic approach to injury/illness management and prevention, not substantially different in nature to the systematic approach that is widely taken to issues such as fiscal and quality management, I2P2s will continue to become more widespread and we will see increasing reduction in workplace-related injury and illness.
