OSHA's stated purpose is to save lives, prevent workplace injuries and illnesses, and protect the health of all America's workers. Since 1995, OSHA has emphasized an approach that goes beyond just compliance with standards to focus on the achievement of results. As part of this revised emphasis, OSHA now offers two types of relationship to employers – partnership or traditional enforcement. To be considered for partnership, a safety program must include features such as “management commitment, meaningful participation of employees, a systematic effort to find safety and health hazards whether they are covered by existing standards or not, documentation that the identified hazards are fixed, training for employees and supervisors, and ultimately a reduction in injuries and illnesses."
