Dr. Lavian has served as an industry fellow and lecturer with U.C. Berkeley's Industrial Engineering and Operation Research (IEOR) Department and with U.C. Berkeley Engineering's Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology (SCET). He has also been a part of U.C. Professional Experience

Dr. Lavian has experience in both the high-tech industry and academic laboratories. He has served as a principal investigator for three US Department of Defense (DARPA) projects, and he directed a wireless research project for an undisclosed US federal agency. Dr. Lavian also worked as a principal scientist at Nortel Labs, where he served as technical chair of the Patent Committee for Nortel Networks' EDN. Dr. Lavian served as a visiting scientist at UC Berkeley's RAD Lab and as Technical co-Chair of IEEE Interconnects at Stanford University.

Additionally, Dr. Lavian has designed and developed switches, routers, gateways, network applications, architectures, and communication systems. He successfully led and developed the first network resource-scheduling service for grid computing. Furthermore, he developed the first demonstrated transatlantic dynamic allocation of 10Gbs Lambdas as a grid service. Dr. Lavian spearheaded the development of the first demonstrated wire-speed active network device on commercial hardware.
